Thumbprint Cookies

1/2 cup margarine

1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1 egg (divided)

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup finely chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Mix margarine, sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla thoroughly.  Blend flour and salt; stir in.  Beat egg whites slightly with fork.  Roll dough into balls (1 teaspoon per ball).  Dip balls in egg whites and then roll in nuts.  Place about 1-inch apart on an un-greased baking sheet.  Press thumb gently in center of each ball.  Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until set.  Cool.  Fill thumbprints with your favorite jellies.  Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
