Cousin Jane, born in 1887 and a Home Economics teacher in the early 1900's had this recipe in her class book.
2 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 c. Crisco or butter
1 egg
3/4 c. milk
flavoring & salt
Cream butter & sugar, add lightly beaten egg & beat thoroughly together. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with the milk; add flavoring. Pour into greased muffin tins & bake 15-20 minutes in a moderate oven. If baked in a loaf 30-40. Nuts, cocoa or raisins may be added to the dry ingredients to give variety.
