Gertrude's Sugar Cookies

Gertrude was a cousin to my husband's grandmother. This was taken from a school notebook I have. I would imagine it was for a high school class. The book is very very yellowed, frail and stained. Gertrude was born in 1909, so the book itself is probably about 90 years old. I'm suprised there are so many "directions" with this recipe, but it's probably because it was for school purposes.

1/4 c. butter

2/3 c. sugar

1 egg

1 tb. milk

1 3/4 c. flour

1 1/2 ts. B. P.

1 ts. vanilla

Cream butter, add sugar and cream thoroughly. Add beaten egg, milk and flour which has been sifted with B. P. Add vanilla and if necessary add enough more flour to make a dough stiff enough to roll. Roll out on floured board. Cut with cookie cutter and sprinkle each with a little sugar. Bake in a hot oven from 5-8".
