Aunt Evvy's Apple Strudel

I found this in my mother-in-laws collection with a note that it was from her sister-in-law Evvy. As I was typing this, I realized it might be a good idea to read through this recipe thoroughly before making it.

5 lg. green apples peeled cored & cut 1/4 in slices

1/2 c. sugar

1/2 c. golden raisins

1/2 c. walnuts ch

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 lb. phyllo dough

1/4 c. bread crumbs

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

1 1/2 tsp. lemon peel

3/4 c. clarified butter

conf. sugar

Combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon peel & raisins. Brush 6 or 7 sheets phyllo dough with butter & layer them to form a stack. Repeat to form a second stack. Sprinkle nuts & bread crumbs on top of dough in a strip 2 1/2 in wide. Leave 2 inches of exposed dough at ea of the narrow ends about 1 in along the side closest to you. Distribute apples mixture evenly over nuts & crumbs. Fold ea narrow end (2 in strips) inward, then starting with the long side nearest you carefully roll the strudel. Repeat for 2nd strudel. Place strudel 1 in apart on baking dish seam side down. Brush tops with butter. Bake 400 10 min then 325 20 min or until strudels are light brown. Cool 15 min & sprinkle with powdered sugar before cutting. Makes 2 strudels.
