Mom's Vegetable Beef Soup

3 pounds stew meat (I like using the beef for stir fry, seems more tender)

1 or 2 beef soup bones (optional)

1 large can tomato juice

6 cups water

1/3 cup onion, coarsely chopped

1 tablespoon salt

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon chili powder (I used one of my Penzey's paprika spice mixes)

2 bay leaves

1 cup celery, chopped

1 cup carrots, chopped

1 cup potatoes, diced

1 cup cabbage, chopped

Brown stew meat and any meat on the bone (if used).  Place in soup pot and add water, tomato juice, onion, salt, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder and bay leaves.  Bring to boil and then simmer for 1 1/2 hours.  Add vegetables and simmer for another 1 to 1 1/2 hours.  Makes about 10 servings.
