Eggless, Milkless, Butterless Cake-Becky

1/4 cup shortening

1 cup sugar

2 cups raisins

1 cup water

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon cloves

1/2 teaspoon salt

Boil all together 3 minutes.

Add the following:

2 cups flour

1 cup chopped hickory nuts

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda, dissolved in a little water

Place in meat loaf pan and bake at 300 degrees for about 2 hours. Check frequently as this is an old recipe of my Grandma Metzner's and baking time may vary. Should be nicely browned when done. A very nice fruit cake. From a very stained page in her 1902 West Bend Cookbook.
